Hello, everyone! Here I am again after a week later. I hope that you are doing well and staying healthy :) It's the flu season! Anyway, I am back with an entirely novel subject area, and I am going to talk about our last task given by our instructor, which is creating an "AI-integrated teaching material". The material is about movie posters and comparison & contrast of the teacher-generated movie posters with student-generated movie posters. I worked, collaborated, and created the task with my peer Ali Efe Aslan. So, let's begin if you are ready for take-off!
To begin with, we first decided which theme we would use in the interactive online e-book with its twenty units in the PDF format for high school preparatory classes published by the Ministry of Education (MoE) in Türkiye. Then, we decided on our language focus and we chose "writing skills" to integrate into the AI-integrated teaching material task. Moreover, we decided how we would enhance our target students' learning by using a generative AI tool. We chose Unit 3 in the e-book titled "Movies" and we decided to generate four movie posters, in which movies were chosen from IMDb, for teacher materials in the pre-task stage. We chose three films in the list of 500 greatest movies of all time and generated each movie's poster from Microsoft Bing Image Creator by analyzing the real posters of each movie and writing each movie poster's outlook. The movies have been chosen as "The Dark Knight", "Interstellar", "The Pianist" and "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies". Furthermore, we designed a warm-up activity in the pre-task stage, which involves students choosing one of the four movie posters and describing it in three sentences, and we completed the pre-task stage.
Afterward, we designed a while-task stage since we moved on step by step throughout the whole task design. In the while-stage task, we have prepared a task that includes asking the target students to design their posters in which they are inspired by the teacher-generated movie posters. Then, we prepared 5-step instructions for students to write a paragraph in at most 50 words describing their movie poster chosen from one of the four movies previously in groups of four. After this process, students are asked to copy their paragraph and paste it into the prompt box on the Microsoft Bing Image Creator website. Lastly, students are allowed to rewrite and edit the prompt based on the outcome given by the website according to the teacher's movie posters.
Lastly, we designed a post-task stage where we included two discussion and three reflective questions for students and the teacher to discuss, compare, and contrast collaboratively on the movie posters. The questions have been edited according to the students' experiences and opinions about the task and movie posters. Finally, we concluded the task by giving a small assignment to the students that they could do at home. In the assignment, students are asked to imagine that they are supposed to hand in their movie poster to a local digital newspaper for it to be published in the movie reviews part by touching up their movie posters. Then, they are asked to copy and paste it in the blank given in the template.
As for the task design process, we had difficulty throughout the movie poster designs because we first missed the fact that we were supposed to design the pictures as teachers and we used Pinterest to find the movie posters for the movies we had chosen before. Then, we realized that this would be wrong and began working on our design with our prompts in the Microsoft Bing Image Generator. We first analyzed the original movie posters published and described each one in our own words in a paragraph; then, we copied the paragraph and pasted it to generate each movie poster design. We couldn't obtain the appropriate outcome at first; however, we edited our prompts and rewrote each one. As a result, we got excellent outcomes. Additionally, the movie posters seemed authentic and similar to the original movie posters. As for the task designs, the process was smooth and manageable but I had difficulty in writing discussion questions in the post-stage task design and assignment design. However, I managed them after all by brainstorming and employing new ideas during the task process. Furthermore, we designed four movie posters together while he designed the while-task design and I designed the post-task design and assignment design. Finally, the project finished in around 5 hours together with minor touch-ups and I enjoyed during the task process with my peer Ali Efe Aslan.
To sum up, it was such an innovative, challenging, and creative task for me. I am sure that I will use the task design in my future EFL classes where appropriate. So, that was all from me, folks. This task was the last task of the fall semester and I produced lots of awesome tasks with quite a lot of effort but it was worth it.
